HISO 10104:2024 Allergy and Adverse Reaction Data Standard

Summary

HISO is assisting the Health Identity Platform team with the efforts to renovate the National Medical Warnings System. This is a multi-staged approach where the warning data is progressively standardised by category, moving entries from a mainly free text alert, to being coded using SNOMED CT and accessed via a FHIR API.

The New Zealand Patient Summary (NZPS), our fully conforming adaptation of the International Patient Summary (IPS) standard, identifies allergies, intolerances and adverse reactions as a mandatory component and this is being addressed first by the project team.

The solution will encompass allergies, intolerances and adverse reactions to medicines, edible substances, chemical substances and biological substances.

Developed as a ‘micro standard’ that states only the essentials and is designed to make conformance requirements easily implemented and tested, the new standard will ensure alignment with our key interoperability standards, SNOMED CT, FHIR and IPS, while enabling the API and its clients to be delivered at pace.
