What is Whaihua?

Whaihua is a digital interface that allows health providers to view information held in Health New Zealand registers, the Book My Vaccine tool and also record newborn enrolments.

Whaihua was launched in December 2023 and will continue to develop functionality based on feedback from users and strategic priorities as the health system in New Zealand builds towards long term interoperability.

What providers should use Whaihua?

Providers who are working in assisted channels, support or outreach activities can utilise Whaihua’s current functionality. As Whaihua continues to be developed the types of providers that can utilise Whaihua will also expand. Some examples of providers currently using Whaihua are outlined below:

Newborn Enrolment

The Newborn Enrolment Service has been developed as a standalone solution which in the future can be adapted to support other aspects of enrolment. Whaihua allows you to create and follow up on newborn nominations and support newborns to access immunisation services. Types of roles that use this service in Whaihua:​

  • Health NZ AIR Administrators​
  • Health NZ Newborn Enrolment coordinators

Outreach Immunisation Services (OIS)

Whaihua supports the co-ordination of Tier 2 Outreach Services. With future planned enhancements Whaihua will manage engagement with outreach support referrals and allow you to initiate outreach services for a consumer, assign a provider to these services, connect with consumers and record outcomes of these cases. Types of roles that use this service in Whaihua:​

  • Health NZ OIS coordinators​
  • Tier 2 OIS contracted providers​.

Outbreak Response (COVID) assisted channel

Whaihua allows you to assist consumers with their COVID enquiries, bookings, reporting a RAT result and generating a vaccination document. Types of roles that use this service in Whaihua:​

  • Health NZ contact centre advisors
  • National telehealth service advisors
  • Local community hub providers​
  • Health NZ identity services team

Immunisation assisted channel

The assisted channel includes direct communication activities to those who are nearly due, due or just overdue for a vaccination, or are part of a specific campaign. ​Types of roles that use this service in Whaihua:​

  • National telehealth service advisors
  • Local community hub providers​
  • Health NZ identity services team

Cervical Screening Support Services (SSS)

Whaihua supports the coordination and delivery of Cervical Screening Support Services. You can connect with consumers, see screening history or pathway status, record outcomes of these tasks, update consumer details. Types of roles that use this service in Whaihua:​

  • Screening Support Service contracted providers​
  • Health NZ regional coordinators or administrators

Cervical Screening

Whaihua allows users to view screening history in code or txt form only. Types of roles that use this service in Whaihua:​

  • Clinicians checking screening history
  • Laboratories
  • Colposcopy clinics

How to request access to Whaihua?

If you are a support, outreach or assisted channel provider and would like to onboard to Whaihua or require further information use the option below that best fits you:

Outreach immunisation Services and Newborn Enrolment 

  • Reach out to your District Lead.

Outbreak Response (COVID) assisted channel or Immunisation assisted channel

  • Submit a request to help@imms.min.health.nz with details about the service you're providing and someone will be in touch to start the process.

Cervical Screening Support Services (SSS) and Cervical screening

  • Submit a request to screening@health.govt.nz with details about the service you're providing, and someone will be in touch to start the process
