HISO 10099:2022 New Zealand Patient Summary (NZPS) sets a standard for a core personal health data set that consumers can easily access and share with family and whānau. NZPS helps people tell their health story in digital form and streamlines their interactions with health services.

NZPS fully conforms to ISO 27269:2021 Health informatics – International patient summary and HL7® FHIR International Patient Summary (IPS) Implementation Guide while being adapted to our unique environment.

IPS is endorsed by HISO as a principal standard for interoperability alongside HL7® FHIR® and SNOMED CT. NZPS is a deliverable of our Interoperability Roadmap and a standard that contributes to a more integrated health system.

In 2022-23 an expert advisory group of health professionals, software experts and consumer representatives guided work to produce HISO 10099:2022 NZIPS Draft Standard (PDF, 4.3MB).

Subsequent work with the standards community produced a first release of the NZPS FHIR Implementation Guide.

The IPS-athon at Digital Health Week NZ 2023 brought to life e-patient Iosefa and supporting personas, whose needs over 150 health informaticians, service designers and software developers addressed over three days. NZPS development work continued in 2024 through the Ring of FHIR connectathon and SNOMED Working Bee.
