Privacy statement template for community pharmacies
The Privacy Act 2020 requires New Zealand organisations to be transparent about how, when, and why they collect personal information.
A privacy statement tells people how you will be collecting, using and disclosing their information.
Health NZ Commissioning, Privacy Office and community pharmacy representatives have developed a generic privacy statement that community pharmacies can adapt. The statement is intended as a template, that community pharmacy organisations and community pharmacies can use to improve their privacy statements, and support privacy compliance for the activities and information sharing that Health NZ is involved in (eg, entitlement card information such as the Community Services Card (CSC) and Prescription Subsidy Card (PSC), prescription information, and pharmacy loyalty care).

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner has a Privacy Statement Generator (Priv-o-matic), to create basic privacy statements. It is ideal for small to medium sized organisations.

Minor Health Conditions Service Pilot Evaluation 2023
A community pharmacy-based Minor Health Conditions Service (MHCS) was piloted in ten priority districts from 12 June 2023 to 30 September 2023. Nearly 120,000 people accessed the service through over 700 pharmacies.
Objectives of the service were to:
- Improve access to consultation, advice and treatment for common minor ailments and reduce inequity of health outcomes.
- Promote care through community pharmacy by encouraging the use of community pharmacists as a first port of call for consultation and treatment.
- Reduce pressure on general practice, urgent care, and emergency departments by transfer of appropriate demand to pharmacists.
The minor health conditions included in the service were acute diarrhoea or dehydration, eye infections and inflammation, pain and fever, scabies, head lice, eczema or dermatitis, and minor skin infections.
Health New Zealand has now completed its evaluation of the service.
Our evaluation found evidence that improved access to care and promotion of care through community pharmacy was partially or fully achieved. There was no strong evidence that the service reduced pressure on general practice, urgent care or emergency departments. However, with suitable development the service may have potential to reduce pressure on other parts of the health system.
The development of an enduring MHCS will be considered as part of our primary care development work programme, with sector engagement.
