Intervention (Counselling)

Anyone can access counselling support, including those affected by someone else's gambling.

All services contracted by Te Whatu Ora | Health New Zealand provide free and confidential support.

Find support here.

Anyone can self-exclude from a gambling venue, or multiple venues. The best way to organise this is to speak with a counselling service (click here to find your local service).

Public health

Primary prevention contributes to strengthening a community’s capacity and readiness to advocate for healthy social, physical, spiritual and cultural environments.
Te Whatu Ora | Health New Zealand contracts providers for a range of public health services to prevent and minimise gambling harm.

Public health activities include:

  • promoting healthy public policy
  • developing personal skills and promoting responsible gambling behaviour
  • increasing individual and community awareness and action
  • creating supportive environments
  • strengthening strategic alliances, skills and knowledge
  • monitoring, research and evaluation
  • reorienting services and programmes.

Education awareness

Te Whatu Ora | Health New Zealand leads work on national problem gambling education and awareness.

The goal of this work is to increase the quality of life of New Zealanders by strengthening understanding, awareness of, and the response to preventing and reducing gambling harm.
