A review of the End of Life Choice Act 2019 is taking place during 2024.

On 7 November 2021, the End of Life Choice Act 2019 (the Act) became a law in New Zealand making assisted dying legal. The legislation requires the Ministry of Health – Manatū Hauora to undertake a review of the Act within 3 years of it becoming law, and every 5 years thereafter.

The Ministry of Health is carrying out the review now and will finish in November 2024. The review of the operation of the End of Life Choice Act considers whether the legislation is operating well and achieving its intended purposes.

 

The review of the End of Life Choice Act has two parts:

  • a review of the operation of the Act by the Ministry of Health
  • an online process to gather public opinion about changes that could be made to the Act.

Public consultation for feedback on the End of Life Choice Act is now open. This process provides an opportunity for the public to share their views about the Act.
