Summary

Te Whatu Ora has published its Clinical Performance Metrics for the reporting period January – March 2023.

Data presented in this document shows information on 11 out of 12 clinical metrics for Te Whatu Ora for the period January to March 2023 compared with January to March 2022. It is presented in visual bar-graph form to enable ease of comparison between years. The data underpinning these graphs is in a separate document below.

The clinical performance metrics aim to measure how well the health care system across the country is performing, providing the opportunity to develop local health solutions to address local health issues.

The metrics allow us to measure performance over time with consistency. Where possible the data is published across all regions and districts.

Timeframe for release of Quarter 4 Clinical Performance Metrics

Te Whatu Ora plans to release the next quarterly Clinical Performance Metrics on 31 October 2023. This release is for data for the period 1 April to 30 June 2023.

The release date reflects the time required for important process steps (summarised below), including implementing recommendations from our recent review.

The review recommended improved processes for the collection, processing and validation of data to reduce the risk of errors and provide confidence in publicly reported performance information.

The time required to run those processes robustly dictates when data can be released. The key steps, with relevant internal milestone dates for the Q4 release, are:

  • Data submission from local sites through the national collections process (by 22 Sept)
  • Data checking for completeness and consistency (by 29 Sept)
  • Assembly of metrics tables; quality assurance checks with local teams (by 13 Oct)
  • Assessment of feedback from QA checks, data correction and final checking (by 20 Oct)
  • Approval process for public release (by 27 Oct)
  • Released (31 October)

Te Whatu Ora acknowledges the time lag between the end of the reporting period (30 June) and the publication date (31 October). This is consistent with past practice, though we will be looking to shorten this period through streamlined data processes as a single organisation and improved automation.
