The Quality Improvement Review (the Review) of the national breast screening programme, BreastScreen Aotearoa (BSA) was commissioned by the Chief Executive of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora (Health New Zealand) in May 2022. It assesses whether the arrangements for clinical safety and quality for the BSA programme are fit for achieving the objectives of the programme through 26 recommendations.

In response to those recommendations, the epidemiological review conducted as part of the Review, and input from partner providers and key stakeholders, Health New Zealand have developed an Action Plan to map out how those recommendations within the programme will be achieved. Pae Whakatere, chaired by Dr Nina Scott, will oversee the finalisation and delivery of the Action Plan.

BSA is New Zealand’s publicly funded, national breast screening programme offering asymptomatic women aged 45 to 69 years a free mammogram (x-ray of the breasts) every two years.
