The Ko Awatea Centre is much more than an events centre; it’s a dynamic environment dedicated to improving healthcare and nurturing future leaders.
As an ideal location for meetings, functions, and events, the Ko Awatea Centre offers much more than just spaces. It acts as a vibrant hub for healthcare professionals, promoting diversity, innovation, and partnerships to improve healthcare and develop future leaders.
Opening hours
- Monday – Friday from 7:00am to 5:30pm.
- All users must vacate the centre by 5:30pm.

- 23 fully air-conditioned function and breakout rooms: Perfect for various types of gatherings.
- Two large lecture theatres: Ideal for large presentations and lectures.
- One tiered lecture theatre: Equipped with a podium, laptop connectors, Wi-Fi screen-sharing, hands-free microphone, portable mics, and recording capabilities. It seats 140 people, including four wheelchair-accessible spots.
- One computer lab: Available for booking and equipped with modern technology.
- Social areas: You can eat, drink and use the Wi-Fi in our social area.

Ko Awatea Centre Management Office does not provide room configuration setup unless it is a formal booking for a formally quoted event. Room users may reconfigure the room to meet their requirements. At the end of the scheduled time, the client is responsible for restoring the room to its original configuration. Layout formats are provided in each room for reference.
Any rooms not returned to the configuration may incur charges at the discretion of centre management. Please follow the image displayed in the room.

For all staff please be advised that if you require time to set up and break down your meeting room, you must ensure that you book this time as part of your reservation. The Ko Awatea Centre often run back-to-back meetings so you do need to ensure you have enough time to reconfigure your room to your requirements.

In all teaching spaces, access to the Counties Manukau Health network is through the terminal server. However, you cannot access the Counties Manukau Health network on any computers in the shared space.

Basic Instructions for the training rooms: (not lecture theatre)
To use:
- Turn on the projector using the control panel on the credenza ‘power on’ (You will need to wait until the red light stops flashing as this is the projector warming up).
- If using the computer in the credenza place your thumb drive in the USB connector behind the screen then ensure PC is selected. (Remember to turn on the PC monitor).
- The username is the name that appears when you first see the login screen (if this not displayed then hit the Esc key and this will appear). The daily password is the same as the wireless password posted on the digital signage.
- If you are connecting a laptop, ensure the appropriate source is selected (Laptop VGA, Laptop HDMI). Also if you are playing sound through your laptop, connect the sound cable provided into the headphone connection on your laptop.
- If you wish to use the DVD player then ensure DVD is selected and you can then use the play, pause, stop and forward/back functions on the control panel.
- The volume dial controls the volume from any selected sound source.
- At the conclusion of session press ‘power off’ and ensure the room configuration is reset.

The technologies that we have in the Ko Awatea Centre can be used to fit a variety of applications and situations. We also have a computer lab that can be booked out in advance, or we have communal computers located in the common area of the Centre.
You can connect to the Ko Awatea Wi-Fi with most Wi-Fi enabled devices. The Ko Awatea Wi-Fi network allows access to the internet and required resources to assist with learning activities. Connecting your wireless device will require the username and the password of the day, which can be requested via the Centre Management Office.

The Ko Awatea Centre, located on the Middlemore Hospital campus, is an education facility open to everyone. To ensure the safety and security of all patients, personnel, and their information, all visitors must adhere to Health NZ Counties Manukau’s strict requirements.
Please follow all instructions and directions provided by the Ko Awatea Centre Management team, and make sure all attendees are aware of these guidelines.

- Monday to Friday: 7am-5:30pm; Rooms must be vacated by 5:30pm sharp, unless otherwise agreed.
- After-hours bookings, including evenings and weekends are available to external bookings only* by arrangement. Additional charges will apply.
- For external bookings, use of meeting rooms will be charged by half day, or full day only.

Any lost/non-returned AV equipment, or for damaged equipment through negligence, the Ko Awatea Centre Management Office reserve the right to on charge the cost of replacement, at a minimum charge of $200.

As the Ko Awatea Centre is situated within the hospital, it operates a strict no-alcohol policy. Please do not bring any alcohol into the building.

There are limited carparks at Middlemore Hospital. Please consider using public transport.
Parking is charged by the hour at Middlemore Hospital. If driving, please car share where possible.
The closest carpark to the Ko Awatea Centre is Carpark 4.
The bus stop and train station are located outside the Galbraith Building entrance of the hospital, which is on Hospital Road. Once in the main entrance, follow the Rainbow Corridor to the Ko Awatea Centre, using the wayfinding boards for directions.

Please ensure you follow all instructions and directions provided to you by the Ko Awatea Centre Management team, ensuring that all attendees are aware of these instructions. Signage and workplace specific instructions will be pointed out to you on arrival.

If you observe an unsafe act or hazard, please report the issue immediately to the Ko Awatea Centre Management Office.
For staff, please utilise the Safety-First application to raise an Incident report.

n the event of a medical emergency, please advise the Ko Awatea Centre Management team immediately. If no assistance is available, locate the nearest internal telephone and dial 777 providing as much detail as possible.

If you see a fire:
- Report the fire immediately to emergency services:
- Dial 777 from the nearest internal telephone; or
- Dial 111 from a personal mobile; or
- Dial 5777 from a Counties Manukau Health allocated mobile
- Activate the nearest fire alarm – push and break the cover to activate.
- Evacuate the building via your nearest fire exit and assemble at the identified assembly point.
If you hear the fire alarm:
- Evacuate the building immediately via your nearest fire exit and assemble at the identified assembly point. Push to break the fire alarm cover (Manual Call Point) to release the fire door.
- Stay with your colleagues (unless otherwise informed) and follow all Fire Warden instructions.
- Please advise a Fire Warden of any colleagues that are missing.

Counties Manukau Health has a strict no-smoking policy. Smoking and vaping is not permitted in any area of the facility or grounds. Failure to adhere to these rules may result in you being escorted from the site.
