Today, Minister of Health Ayesha Verrall announced the Te Whatu Ora and Te Aka Whai Ora Health Workforce Plan 2023/24. The plan outlines the current challenges facing New Zealand’s health workforce, and the opportunities to address them now and in the future.

The plan outlines five action areas Te Whatu Ora and Te Aka Whai Ora will address over the next year to support and grow our health workforce:

  • Growing pathways into health, with a focus on growing our Māori and Pacific health workers
  • Driving local-led innovation in training throughout Aotearoa
  • Bolstering priority workforce groups
  • Providing more support to retain our workforce, and;
  • Growing our future leaders.

While there are challenges to navigate, we have a real opportunity to reshape our health system and create an enduring, equitable, well-supported and sustainable workforce, able to meet the changing needs and expectations of New Zealanders.
