Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora (Health NZ) is thrilled to announce the establishment of a Technical Advisory Group (TAG) dedicated to transforming maternity care across Aotearoa. This team of experts and community representatives will play a key role in the development of the Maternity Commissioning Framework, a core element of the wider Kahu Taurima programme, which aims to make maternity and early years services more equitable, accessible, and whānau-centered.
Interest in joining the TAG was overwhelming, with a large number of skilled, passionate individuals from across the country applying. This enthusiastic response demonstrates the strong desire for change within the sector and a shared commitment to building a maternity care system that better supports all whānau.
Deborah Woodley, Director Starting Well at Health NZ, expressed her appreciation for the applicants and the importance of the TAG’s work, saying, "We are truly grateful for the incredible interest in this work and for each person’s willingness to support this kaupapa. There is a real appetite for change in maternity care, and this group will bring a wealth of expertise and vision to guide that transformation. Together, we are building a future where all whānau can access high-quality, culturally safe care, no matter who they are or where they live."
Tamara Karu and Ed Hyde, Co-Chairs of the Technical Advisory Group, highlighted the group’s shared vision, saying, "We have an incredible team with deep knowledge and a commitment to positive change. This work is essential for creating a maternity system that provides safe, high-quality care to all. We’re excited to begin working with the rest of the team to bring our ideas and expertise together to make a real impact for whānau across Aotearoa."
The TAG’s work will focus on developing the Maternity Commissioning Framework, which will describe the nationally consistent requirements and expectations for maternity services that are locally tailored and regionally commissioned. As part of the Kahu Taurima programme, the Maternity Commissioning Framework aims to close health equity gaps and improve outcomes for whānau Māori, Pacific Peoples, Tāngata Whaikaha (disabled people), and other communities currently facing barriers to accessing quality maternity care.
