After more than three decades of daring to dream, the Pacific Islands community of Te Tai Tokerau finally have a place to call their own.
Fale Pasifika Te Tai Tokerau, a Pacific provider based in Whangarei, offers a wide range of services including healthcare and wellness, Whanau Ora and business mentoring to Pacific people from Cape Reinga down to Te Kaipara.
Jonny Kumitau, Fale Pasifika Te Tai Tokerau Leveki | General Manager, says that the new centre will serve as a hub for the Pacific Islands community to preserve their language, gather socially, share meals, and simply enjoy each other's company.
“The new Fale is designed to cater to various community needs, ranging from business and health to education, weaving and performing arts.
“The opening was so rewarding for everyone—it was a big day for us to show off our people and be proud of who we are, knowing that we have done something really special for our community.”
Te Hiwi Preston, Fale Pasifika Board Chair, says that now, Pacific people in Northland have a space to come to where they can celebrate their identify. “The opening was an acknowledgement that Pacific people make a significant contribution to society and the economy—I have so much gratitude to those who initiated this journey many years ago, and to all since who contributed to making this dream a reality.”
Since opening, the Fale has hosted a range of events, including immunisations, senior Pasifika fitness classes, a mental health talanoa and a Pacific networkers fono.
